A few of the 10 lakh candidates who took the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) held in January (online ) and February (offline) got a glimpse of their scores before they were officially declared, when Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, conducted a trial run of a link to the results on its website on Monday, 11th March, night.

"The results were available for a couple of hours on Monday night when it was being tested. My friend sent me a text message to alert me that the results were online", said a candidate. He added that many of his friends, however, were not that lucky, with IIT-B taking down the link after a couple of hours.

Swamped with calls from candidates on Tuesday morning, IIT-Bombay, which coordinated GATE 2013, clarified on its website that the results would officially be released only on Friday, March 13th.

There has been a steady increase in the number of engineering graduates taking GATE since 2009 when 2.2 lakh candidates took the test. As many as 7.77 lakh candidates across the country registered for GATE 2012. There was a 45% increase in the number of candidates who registered with IIT-Madras to take GATE this year, with 2.4 lakh BE and BTech graduates taking the test over last years 1.65 lakh.

Fifteen subjects were conducted online in GATE 2013 but a majority of students opted to take one of the six streams required offline in February. GATE scores are used to determine admission to Masters and Doctoral courses in Engineering, Technology, Architecture and Science in institutions funded by the ministry of human Resource Development and other government agencies.
